She Danced Beside Legends-and Became One Herself!

The LIVING estate of Ms. Mazola "MAZIE" Webb

Waaay back in the day, when Chicago prided itself on its Southside nightlife, on stages at The Regal, The Rhumboogie, The Sutherland Hotel, The Club De Lisa--where all the greats played; among them was Mazola "Mazie" Webb. She shared her stage with Duke Ellington. Count Basie. Miles Davis. Savion Glover. Legends.

She was elegance personified— a dazzling tap dancer with quick feet, sharper wit, and a presence impossible to ignore. Mazie moved through Chicago’s golden jazz years in high heels, satin gloves and fox furs. She stepped onto stages and dazzled the masses.  She met and worked with musical geniuses where she practiced her craft as they composed songs around the piano after the clubs closed. Ms Mazie recounts a well known jazz trumpeter writing a song to her taps. Later in her life she performed with the Dyerettes. A dance troupe out of Chicago. They all performed with Sammy Davis Jr., Nat King Cole, Benny Green, Ruth Brown, Roy Hamilton, Tito Puentes, Billy Eckstine and other greats.

But her story was never just glamour.

Mazie came of age during the Jim Crow era. She traveled the world-the Bahamas, Mt Fuji, Switzerland, during a time when Black performers were celebrated everywhere but the United States. Ms. Mazola reports standing ovations on stage, and denied dignity off it. She traveled through segregated cities, entered clubs through side and back doors, and performed for audiences who adored her talent while society withheld opportunity. Still, she danced. Night after night. City after city. She refused to disappear.

Those who knew Mazie spoke of her magnetism. Musicians lingered near her dressing room. Promoters admired her fire. Romance followed her like perfume — (and we all know how smooth Sidney Poitier was!). Trumpet players, drummers, bass players, businessmen, smooth-talking dreamers, and Chicago men captivated by a woman who belonged to no one but herself. Her life was filled with a heartfelt love story, heartbreaks along the way, pivots, reinventions, and the fierce independence of a woman determined to create beauty on her own terms. And she did!

Ms Mazola's beautiful South Shore Condo is an entertainers home. And here are the records to prove it!

Hell her dining room alone is like a movie set! And sooo many closets. The music room is tea. Talking to you music lovers. Vintage jewelry collectors, don't miss the BAKELITE.

Her wardrobe reflected the world she inhabited: glamorous evening gowns, jumpsuits, a vintage jean collection, tailored coats, sparkling costume jewelry, jazz records for late-night listening, martini and etched wine glasses... Every object in her estate carries echoes of her life.

This is more than an estate sale. It's an invitation into the life of a woman who lived at the center of Chicago’s jazz renaissance — a woman who witnessed history from backstage wings and center stage spotlights alike.
