NEGRITUDE (Neh-Gruh-Tude)

February 28 @ 9:00 am - March 1 @ 3:00 pm
Sherman Beck Yellow

"Black Is Beautiful" got its roots from the Negritude movement of the 1930's.

Negritude (NEH*GRUH*TUDE) is Black Consciousness. Black positivity. Black unity.

"BOTH TEARS AND SWEAT ARE SALTY, BUT THEY RENDER A DIFFERENT RESULT."

"I AM SOMEBODY."

"KEEP HOPE ALIVE."

Black Household Danish African Modern J L Moller Table

This estate speaks to identity, style and the freedom to just be.

Behind an unassuming door in a tucked-away pied-à-terre in President Obama's neighborhood, lives a story told not in chapters, but in objects.

For more than four decades, this remarkable couple quietly built a collection that reads like a love letter — to Black artistry, to modern design, to jazz, to Black history, and to the power of cultural memory.

They never set out to “amass” anything. They just set out to live well — and to live surrounded by meaning. No three piece sets from L. Fish for them! Their journey began in the 1970s, when weekends meant gallery walks, neighborhood bookshops, Maxwell Street Flea market (when it was really bumping!), and long conversations with artists and musicians whose names were not yet known beyond their communities. They report staying up well into the night armed with Hennessey "White," laughing, talking art, debating politics while listening to Miles weep into his horn as he lamented over losing Cecily. Always fortified with food, "Pepper Pot" soup was a staple for them in the winter months, fish, rice and fruit in the summer.

They explained to us the importance of collecting. "Buy only what speaks to you."

What you see in the photos from this estate speaks to folks that know the art of living--and acquiring. They laugh in unison as they recount buying three Johannes Andersen dining chairs at a flea market and driving to St Louis with a trailer hitched to the back of their car to snag the fourth chair. Once they arrived at the country auction, the husband says in stood on the back wall and his wife stood waaay in the front, damn near next to the auctioneer. "After every bid she looked at me first to see if she should continue bidding and I just nodded yes until we won. We won that Danish chair!" MCM before it became to mean luxury. Did we mention this is a living estate?

As we sat and listened to their wonderful stories of hunting for 1st pressings in basement record shops, collecting sterling one piece at a time, and bringing art home by plane...

They never considered themselves owners, simply stewards. Caretakers if you will. Actually we're hearing that term quite often lately. Stewards. Each purchase was acquired carefully. Lovingly. Now its time for their next chapter. And that next chapter begins with YOU.
