Reaching the position of Director of Housing speaks volumes about her hard work\, leadership skills\, and commitment. \nEstate Sale Goddess is honored to share the family photos of Deborah L. Washington with YOU! Some of the family lore is Ms. Edwina\, Deborah Washingtons grandmother worked as an elevator girl for a well known Chicago Italian mobster. She also was the first woman in the Ida B. Wells project to own a fur coat. \nWhile the housing development the family once lived (39th and MLK Dr) no longer exists\, it was often referred to as "Paradise." The new development boast weeping willow trees\, beautiful lagoons\, birds\, manicured lawns and safe clean housing. Everyone knew their neighbors and treated each other like kinfolk. The Ida B. Wells housing development provided new housing for working class Black Folks in the late '30's and early '40's. MANY families pulled together and saved their paychecks and purchased single family homes. Many families fell prey to unjust\, unfair\, deadly "contract" agreements. (During that time it was almost unheard of for Blacks to acquire a mortgage). Many paid cash. \nIn the instance of Debra L Washington\, education was her key to success.
